Monitoring Fish Populations on the 3D Reefs

The second 2026 survey campaign dedicated to monitoring the fish populations around the 3D Reefs has now come to an end!
Since they were deployed in 2017, the reefs have been regularly studied to better understand their ability to host and promote marine biodiversity. Designed using large-format 3D printing and more environmentally friendly materials, they recreate complex shapes inspired by natural habitats.
As every year, AMPN, in collaboration with the scientific divers from Thalassa Marine Research & Environmental Awareness and Aquanaute Expertise, carried out the identification, counting, and measurement of the fish found on and around the reefs. GoPro cameras and BRUVS (Baited Remote Underwater Video Stations) were also deployed. These make it possible to observe more elusive species that generally remain at a distance from divers.
The data collected in 2026 will now be compiled and analysed. It will add to the results from previous years and, we hope, confirm the value of these structures in supporting the development and preservation of underwater biodiversity.
