Monitoring Human Activities

Reducing pressures

Located in the heart of an urban environment, Monaco's Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) require careful monitoring of human activities to ensure a balance between marine conservation and sustainable use.

As the MPA manager, the AMPN implements several monitoring programs to better understand visitor numbers and the various activities taking place within the MPAs:

  • Since 2014: Monitoring fireworks and drone displays.
  • Since 2016: Counting vessels navigating through the Larvotto channels, particularly during the summer season, the Grand Prix events, and the Monaco Yacht Show.
  • Since 2022: Assessing both motorized and non-motorized water sports and recreational activities.
  • Since 2022: Recording recreational and professional diving activities within both MPAs.

These observations, carried out in collaboration with the various stakeholders involved, provide essential data to assess the impact of human activities and adapt MPA management accordingly. This helps ensure that environmental protection and economic activities remain compatible within a framework of sustainable development.

This program is supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
