The AMPN restores the posidonia seagrass meadow

Natural Heritage

Posidonia is a marine plant that forms underwater meadows, providing food and shelter for marine life while offering numerous benefits to humans. Recognizing the importance of this ecosystem, the AMPN established the MPA in 1976 to safeguard the Principality’s only seagrass meadow.

In 2021, with the expertise of Dr. Heike Molenaar, the AMPN launched an experimental Posidonia cutting program within the Larvotto MPA. The goal: to use the protocol developed by Dr. Molenaar to restore a previously degraded area of Larvotto.

The site is monitored annually to assess its development and recolonization. The 2024 results are very promising, showing a 20% increase in seagrass density in the restored area. A scientific study conducted at another Mediterranean site, comparing different restoration methods, confirmed that the technique used in Monaco is the most effective!

The 2025 monitoring campaign has just begun. The results will help consolidate previous observations and contribute to advancing scientific knowledge.

Program supported by Governement of Monaco.
