Reserve Effect Monitoring

Natural Heritage

As the managing authority of Monaco's Marine Protected Areas (MPA), AMPN has been conducting an annual monitoring of the "reserve effect" since 2016. This monitoring reveals the impact of protection on biodiversity and fish populations. In protected areas where fishing is prohibited, fish can reproduce and grow undisturbed. This typically leads to an increase in the number, size, and diversity of fish.

The second annual "reserve effect" monitoring campaign, conducted in collaboration with Thalassa Marine Research & Environmental Awareness, has just concluded. The results, compared with those from non-protected areas, once again confirm the effectiveness of Monaco's MPAs.
