Monitoring of brown meagres and groupers

Natural Heritage

Environmental monitoring continues this September, with a focus on brown meagres and groupers.

These two iconic Mediterranean species, once threatened by overfishing, play a key role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. Hopefully, they have been protected in Monaco and France.

Since 2018, AMPN has been collaborating with Thalassa Marine Research & Environmental Awareness and Aquanaute Expertise to conduct scientific monitoring of their populations twice a year. These surveys are conducted in Larvotto’s Marine Protected Area, as well as within the Marine Educative Area, to assess the effectiveness of protection measures.

The first campaign of 2025 was conducted in July, and the second has just been completed. While the data are still being analyzed, one clear trend is already emerging. Between 2018 and 2024, the populations of brown meagres and groupers have steadily increased, confirming the effectiveness of the ban on removal.
