Monitoring of brown meagres and dusky groupers

In September, the scientific monitoring carried out by AMPN continues!
This time, observations are focusing on two iconic species: the brown meagre and the dusky grouper.
Historically vulnerable to fishing pressure, these two fish play an important role in the balance of Mediterranean ecosystems. Their protection since 1993 in Monaco and France now helps support the conservation and recovery of their populations.
Since 2018, AMPN has been working alongside Thalassa Marine research & Environmental awareness and Aquanaute Expertise to monitor changes in fish populations. Two monitoring surveys are carried out each year within the Larvotto Marine Protected Area and the Marine Educative Area.
After the first monitoring survey of 2026, carried out in June, the second survey has just been completed. The data are currently being analysed, but the results from previous years are already encouraging, showing a slow but steady increase in brown meagre and dusky grouper populations.
