Monitoring of Brown Meagre and Groupers

Natural Heritage

The brown meagre and the dusky grouper are two emblematic heritage species of the Mediterranean Sea. Their calm nature and curiosity have made them particularly vulnerable to overfishing, threatening their survival. This is why their capture has been banned in both Monaco and France since 1993.

Since 2018, the AMPN, as the manager of Monaco’s Marine Protected Areas, has conducted biannual monitoring of these species.

Carried out in collaboration with Thalassa Marine Research & Environmental Awareness and Aquanaute Expertise, this monitoring helps assess the effectiveness of protection measures and track the gradual return of these fish.

The first campaign of 2025 took place in July; the second is scheduled for September. Data from 2024 showed a slow but steady increase in population numbers — an encouraging sign for the conservation of these species.

This program is supported by the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco.
