Monitoring fish juveniles
Natural Heritage
On June 23, the second annual survey of juvenile fish was carried out within Monaco’s two Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
Led by AMPN, this monitoring aims to identify species whose early life stages settle within the MPAs, estimate their abundance, and characterize their preferred habitats.
These observations help adjust management measures, thereby ensuring the renewal and strengthening of adult fish populations.
This survey recorded more than 9,000 juveniles across 12 species, confirming the key role of MPAs in providing nursery and developmental areas for these young fish.
It also highlighted the colonization of the new rock islets created as part of the Larvotto seawall redevelopment project, emphasizing the important role these new habitats can play in supporting the site's marine biodiversity.
Next survey scheduled for autumn 2026!
