The Larvotto MPA at the One Ocean Science Congress
Marine Protected Areas
From June 3 to 6, the One Ocean Science Congress was held in Nice, a scientific event organized in the lead-up to the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3). Its main objective was to formulate scientific recommendations to inform discussions at this international conference.
AMPN was represented by THALASSA Marine Research & Environmental Awareness, who presented a poster summarizing the key findings of the reserve effect study conducted within the Larvotto Marine Protected Area (MPA). This work highlights the effectiveness of the management measures implemented by AMPN and was published in the scientific journal ICES Journal of Marine Science.
The results show that a small-sized MPA, even when located in an urban setting, can lead to a significant increase in fish abundance — from two to five times more — provided it is well managed and effectively protected.
In a global context marked by population growth and coastal urbanization, this study provides tangible evidence of the crucial role MPAs play in conserving biodiversity in urban marine environments, where human activity is most intense.
