Research and Development - Monitoring 3D Reef Populations
Marine Protected Areas
In 2017, 3D-printed reefs were submerged in the Larvotto Marine Protected Area. The use of 3D printing allowed for the use of an eco-friendly material made from Dolomite sand and enabled the design to closely mimic the complexity of natural habitats.
These six reefs were placed on a sandy seabed to create new oases of life, providing shelter and support for many marine species.
To ensure their effectiveness, regular monitoring is conducted by the scientific divers from Thalassa Marine Research & Environmental Awareness and Aquanaute Expertise.
Researchers catalog all organisms that take up residence in each reef. The presence of fish, crustaceans, and mollusks helps to track the evolution of marine communities. Results from the latest survey in September 2023 show that over 35 different fish species have been observed in the reefs. The number and size of individuals are steadily increasing, indicating that these reefs are fulfilling their role!
The first survey of 2024 took place in June, and the second one has just concluded. Exciting observations have been made, and the collected data will be analyzed soon.
This program is supported by the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco.
