BRUVS - Baited underwater cameras

Marine Protected Areas

BRUVSsystems are baited underwater cameras. They have the advantage of being easily deployed from the surface without the need for scuba diving. They complement species inventories traditionally conducted by scientific divers. With a one-hour autonomy, BRUVS can be immersed either on the seabed or in mid-water, depending on the target species.

The AMPN took advantage of the very favorable weather conditions of recent days to deploy these systems in mid-water along the Monaco coastline. As a result, we observed several bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) individuals measuring over one meter as well as a school of atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda) attracted by the bait released by the system.

Some clips are available at this link.

Bluefin tuna fishing is strictly regulated. In Monaco, it is governed by Sovereign Ordinance No. 7.369 of February 26, 2019.
