Biofilm study on 3D reefs (ECOSEAS / AMPN laboratory)

As part of her doctoral thesis in connection with the research program on 3D reefs, Elisabeth Riera is conducting a study on biofilm.
Biofilm study is important because its quality and its richness constitute determining elements for the subsequent colonization of an artificial reef.
The objective is to determine the link between the quality of the biofilm and the substrate by comparing the colonization on different samples (Dolomite sand, natural rock and especially concrete, the product normally used to manufacture artificial reefs).
The results will make it possible to highlight which substrates are the most favorable to the establishment of communities of biofilm microorganisms in order to promote subsequent colonization by fauna and flora.
In addition to work on biofilm, experiments focus on the development and diversity of macrofouling. Their objective is to verify over time whether the quality of the biofilm which develops on the Dolomite sand translates into the establishment of a richer community of algae and invertebrates. In addition, they will make it possible to determine if there is a transfer of possible pollutants from the substrate to the colonizing organisms.
