United Children for the Ocean Conference

Marine Educative Area

On June 24, 2025, in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II and many distinguished guests, the students of Class 7A from Saint Charles School—this year’s caretakers of the Educational Marine Area (AME)—brilliantly led the “United Children for the Ocean Conference” at the Hôtel Méridien.

Throughout the year, these young students explored the theme “Better Understanding to Better Protect”, stepping into the shoes of real apprentice scientists. Guided by the AMPN team, they were introduced to marine biodiversity research protocols: fish population surveys, the use of BRUVS cameras, environmental DNA analysis, studies of the food chain, habitats, and artificial reefs.

These hands-on experiences made them aware of both the richness and fragility of marine ecosystems. Their findings highlighted the threats facing these environments and led to a series of concrete recommendations: enhanced monitoring, awareness campaigns, plastic reduction, recycling, eco-friendly behavior, and climate change adaptation. During the conference, the children engaged in interactive exchanges with the guests. Dr. Heike Molenaar and Alexis Pey provided precise scientific insights. H.E. Mr. Bernard Fautrier, Special Adviser to H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince on environmental issues, Ms. Céline Caron-Dagioni, Government Counselor – Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Planning, and H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince each emphasized the importance of Educational Marine Areas, Monaco’s environmental policy, and the Principality’s commitments at the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC).

To conclude, the students shared a powerful message: “Protecting the EMA means protecting our shared future. We are the guardians of a world too often damaged. The sea is NOT just water: it’s our mission!”

We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported us throughout this amazing journey.

Our warmest thanks go to H.S.H. Prince Albert II, His Government, and His Foundation for their unwavering support of the Educational Marine Areas initiative.

We also thank all our project partners: the Department of the Environment, the Department of Maritime Affairs, Mr. Pierre Brezzo of Monaco Riviera Navigation, the Yacht Club of Monaco, NatureMetrics, Community Jameel, the Oceanographic Institute, Mr. Christian Petron, Mr. Claude Morfino, Mr. Jean-Pierre Debernardi, the Hôtel Méridien, Encore Global, as well as biologists Heike Molenaar, Patricia Ventura, Alexis Pey (Thalassa), and Stéphane Jamme.

A special mention goes to the DENJS, the management of Saint Charles School, and Ms. Carine Fiandrino Barber, whose personal and professional qualities enabled the students to develop a strong and lasting environmental awareness.

Finally, a huge bravo to this young generation, full of curiosity, ideas, and hope, already taking meaningful action for the future of our blue planet. You are an inspiration to us all.
