Marine Educative Area "Generation 8" : BRUVS technology

Marine Educative Area

On Tuesday, November 4, the CM2 students of Institution François d’Assise – Nicolas Barré visited the Marine Educative Area (MEA) to discover BRUVS technology.

Accompanied by the AMPN and Dr. Alexis Pey from Thalassa Marine research & Environmental awareness, they were introduced to the use of these baited underwater cameras, which make it possible to identify and study carnivorous marine fauna without the need for scuba diving.

The students themselves carried out the setup following a precise protocol: assembling the equipment, preparing the sardines used as bait, immersing the cameras, and recording the day’s meteorological data.

After understanding how the technology works, they visited the AMPN offices to watch videos recorded by the cameras within the MEA, allowing them to observe a wide variety of marine species.

“Wow, it’s beautiful!” exclaimed one student while watching a moray eel approach the cameras.

“It’s huge!” added another upon discovering a dusky grouper.

These reactions reflected the students’ keen interest and enthusiasm for their Marine Educative Area.

As a reminder, the BRUVS program, implemented by AMPN and Thalassa Marine research & Environmental awareness within the Marine Protected Areas of Monaco, is part of a partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and Community Jameel, which actively supports projects in the fields of science, humanitarian action, and technology.

The Government of Monaco also supports the MEA program.
