Marine Educative Area "Generation 7" : Environmental DNA results n°2
Marine Educative Area
This morning, the AMPN unveiled the much-anticipated second part of the environmental DNA results to the 7ème A class of École Saint-Charles.
Looking back: In November, the students collected water samples from their Marine Educative Area (MEA) and Monaco’s Marine Protected Areas to extract DNA and study local biodiversity.
Very positive results!
- Three endangered species – the dusky grouper, brown meagre, and common dentex – were identified in the MEA, confirming the importance of protecting this ecosystem.
- No non-native species were identified, eliminating the risk of ecological imbalances caused by invasive species.
To conclude, the students reflected on concrete actions to implement in order to preserve endangered species and limit the introduction of exotic species. Their proposals will be presented at the end-of-year event.
A big thank you to the Department of the Environment, the Department of Maritime Affairs, and Monaco Riviera Navigation for their support in making this project possible.
This program is supported by the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco and the Government of Monaco.
