Marine Educative Area "Generation 7" : BRUVS protocol
Marine Educative Area
This morning, the students of 7ème A at Saint-Charles School, responsible for the MEA, were introduced to BRUVS technology. These baited underwater cameras allow for the observation of marine life in its natural habitat without the need for scientific divers.
The "apprentice researchers," guided by the AMPN team, deployed the BRUVS near the solarium of the Rainier III seawall.
After receiving detailed instructions on the protocol to follow, they applied this scientific method with precision and submerged the cameras for an hour.
Once the experiment was completed, the students went to the AMPN headquarters to review the recorded footage. Equipped with identification sheets, they identified the species appearing in the recordings and formulated hypotheses to explain the differences observed between the sites where the cameras were deployed. This analysis allowed them to reflect on the limitations of the BRUVS method and its complementarity with other protocols they had been trained in.
Through this experience, the students gained new knowledge and deepened their understanding of conservation actions to be implemented within the MEA.
The BRUVS program, implemented by AMPN within and around Monaco’s Marine Protected Areas, is part of a partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and Community Jameel, which actively supports projects in the fields of science, humanitarian efforts, and technology.
