Counting brown meagres and groupers through Citizen Science
Events
On Saturday, August 31, the AMPN, in partnership with the Club d'exploration sous-marine de Monaco(CESMM), initiated divers into counting brown meagres and groupers in the Marine Educative Area (MEA) of Monaco.
Beyond raising awareness about the crucial importance of preserving these emblematic and protected species, this citizen science operation enabled sampling through the active participation of a large number of divers.
After a detailed presentation on the morphology, distribution, behavior, and reproduction of these two species, the divers were trained in the survey protocol.
Divided into two groups, the 17 divers were able to count over 80 groupers and around 40 brown meagres, revealing the exceptional richness of this site. The presence of young individuals as well as large reproductive adults highlights the crucial role of this area as a nursery and breeding site.
The participants unanimously praised the day, pleased to have contributed to the collection of valuable data for marine conservation.
A big thank you to all the volunteers and to CESSM for their invaluable support!
