50 Years of the Larvotto Marine Protected Area – Commemorative Stamps
Events
On August 11, 1976, thanks to the momentum and decisive work of the AMPN, Sovereign Ordinance No. 5,851 officially established the Larvotto Marine Protected Area (MPA). Originally called the “Monaco Underwater Reserve”, it became the first MPA in the world created in an urban environment.
Its management was entrusted to the volunteer team of the AMPN, which had worked on its creation. Very quickly, the association turned the MPA's location in the heart of the city into a real strength, enabling rigorous management, enhanced surveillance, and numerous environmental education programs.
For nearly 50 years, the AMPN has tirelessly worked to preserve and promote this unique natural heritage. Environmental monitoring, innovative research programs, educational projects, and regulation of human activities are all initiatives that help protect the richness of this exceptional ecosystem.
Today, the Larvotto MPA celebrates half a century of existence. To mark this historic anniversary, a commemorative postage stamp has been issued, highlighting the richness of the MPA, which the AMPN has carefully preserved for five decades.
These stamps are available for purchase at the Monaco Stamp Office : at the sales counters at espace Honoré II, hall B, the Scala Palace, and Monaco-Ville, or on the website www.oetp-monaco.com.
