50 years of commitment

Events

The Monegasque Association for the Protection of Nature was founded in 1975 to fulfill the wish of Prince Rainier III to preserve part of the coastline of the Principality. In 1976, the AMPN created the “Larvotto Reserve,” the world’s first Marine Protected Area (MPA) in an urban environment, followed in 1986 by the Spélugues Marine Protected Area.

For 50 years, the AMPN has been managing these two MPAs with determination, working tirelessly to safeguard marine biodiversity.

  • Conservation: At the heart of the Larvotto and Spélugues MPAs, the AMPN plays a key role in the conservation of unique habitats such as the posidonia meadows and coralligenous habitats. These areas, true sanctuaries for exceptional biodiversity, benefit from rigorous protection, constant ecological monitoring, and permanent surveillance to ensure their long-term preservation.

  • Research: The AMPN is also distinguished by its central role in scientific research. Through innovative programs such as in situ coral farming, promoting the reintroduction of red coral, and using cutting-edge technologies like 3D printers to create eco-designed artificial reefs, the association is fully committed to the restoration and monitoring of marine ecosystems. These initiatives are strengthened by strong partnerships with renowned institutions, making Monaco's MPAs true natural laboratories for marine conservation and research.

  • Education: The AMPN places awareness and education at the heart of its mission. In 2018, the association created the Marine Educative Area, a program that involves young people in the management of marine ecosystems, providing them with hands-on experience and a deep understanding of environmental issues. This initiative enables them to become active participants in biodiversity preservation. The association also runs awareness campaigns, encouraging public involvement in the protection of the oceans.

  • A Sustainable Future: Through the development of a five-year management plan for the MPAs and clearly defined goals, the AMPN ensures the sustainable protection of the marine ecosystems of the Principality. The association is firmly dedicated to balancing sustainable development and conservation while actively contributing to the global goal of protecting 30% of the seas and oceans by 2030.

The actions implemented by the AMPN are supported by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, His Government, and His Foundation.
