MPA presentation at École Saint-Charles in 7ème class : Intervention n°2
Education and Awareness
On Friday, April 10th, the 7ème E class of Saint-Charles School had the opportunity to discover the Larvotto Marine Protected Area (MPA) during a field trip. This activity is part of a three-session series led by AMPN, aimed at highlighting the importance of MPAs.
After reviewing the concepts covered during the first session, the students explored the terrestrial part of the seaside complex to identify various facilities, informational signs, and maritime markings specific to the MPA.
They then stepped into the shoes of scientists by simulating the implementation of two study protocols. Using models, they learned the method of counting the foliar density of Posidonia, a technique used by scientific divers to assess the health of this essential marine plant.
They also discovered the survey protocol for the brown meagres and dusky groupers, two iconic, threatened, and protected fish species. Divided into three groups, each took turns playing the role of scientific diver, brown meagre, or dusky grouper, making the activity both immersive and fun.
Throughout this half-day, the class gained a better understanding of the importance of MPAs and became aware of the rigor and complexity of the scientific protocols conducted in the field.
